A fellow writer the other day complained of having writer’s block, and she was waiting for some “divine inspiration.” I once complained of the same condition.

But I’ve since learned that there is no such thing. A writer is a writer — always. There is always inspiration somewhere near and there is always something to be said. It may not be what you want to say at the moment, but something is there.

So you’ve been working on one page, chapter or poem for a week now and still feel like it’s going nowhere. It may not be time for it to move forward. Don’t try to force it. Move on to writing something else, even it’s just a journal entry or a grocery list.

I’ve learned that all of us have something within us just waiting to come out. But sometimes it’ll only come out when it’s ready.

Happy writing!

Take Time to Love

May 21, 2009

Recent tragedies in the lives of some of us here at MochaMusings have moved us to take a time out and remind all of our readers of how precious life is. You’ve heard it said a million times, but it’s always nice to have a reminder: Life is short. No one is invincible or immune from death.

So, while you’re on this abbreviated journey we call life, take the time to love.

Love God, first and foremost. He’s the reason the one who has granted us all the time we here.

Love family and friends. TELL them you love them every chance you get. Many of us go through life assuming they know we love them, but sometimes hearing you SAY it means the world.

Love strangers. Strive to inspire or help someone every day. You’d be surprised how big an impact just one small act of kindness can make.

Love yourself. You only have one life, one body. Take care of it.

Love life in all its brevity. Don’t be afraid to live and take chances, and find every reason you can to laugh. Regrets will only hold you back.

Take care and God bless,

MochaMusings

Miracles and Hope

January 19, 2009

As a writer, I live for inspiration and I try to see God in all that happens around me. Recently, I’ve been overwhelmingly inspired and I’ve seen the undeniable work of God.

Tomorrow, our nation will inaugurate Barack Obama as its 44th president. But it’s not just about simply swearing a leader into office. It’s about the color barriers finally being broken in this country. It’s about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream finally being realized. It’s about the unlimited possibilities and the hope for our future. It is my inspiration.

On January 15, we all witnessed or heard about the commercial jet crash into the Hudson River. It’s been called “the miracle on the Hudson,” because amazingly, all 155 people aboard the plane survived. While I don’t discount the heroism of the pilot, crew and rescuers, I know they didn’t do it alone. The outcome could have been tragic, but God put all the right people in the right places at the right time. It was God who guided the mind and hands of the pilot, and moved the rescuers to act.

If these two things alone don’t inspire you; if these two things alone don’t make you feel like there is something out there that’s much greater than you or any other earthly being … I don’t know what will.

Peace and blessings,

Truly Inspired

November 5, 2008

Last night, we made history. And when I say “we” I do not mean African Americans, I mean Americans — all races, genders, creeds.

Today, I am proud. Proud to be American. Proud to be black. Simply, proud.

Not only am I proud but I am inspired beyond words. I am inspired by Barack Obama and his will to press on despite naysayers and nonbelievers; his will to run despite the personal attacks, despite history. I’m inspired by the change this country has embraced and I’m inspired by the all the possibilities to come.

I am grateful that God has blessed me to see the change my ancestors dreamed of, fought and died for. I am glad that my children will be born into the change. I am proud that my young brothers and sisters across this great nation can look up and realize that anything really is possible — it’s not just something that people say. No matter your background or the negative things in your environment, you can do anything you set your mind to, go anywhere your dreams and your legs will take you!

Hope won! Our future is now!
